Een nieuwe dinsdag en weer een nieuwe editie van de Bieb Letter. Fijn dat je de tijd neemt om deze editie door te nemen!

Dit keer o.a. over waarom bibliotheken beter dan Google zijn, 50 jaar online catalogi en vreemde snuiters.

1. Beter

Je kunt veel diensten via Google gebruiken, maar eigenlijk zijn openbare bibliotheken veel beter! Er is veel aan te merken op het feit dat Google zo'n grote invloed heeft op het publiek.

I spoke this week on Techtonic with Shannon Mattern, professor at the New School and author of the new book A City Is Not a Computer. Among other things, we talked about the public library as a superior alternative to Google. In her book, Mattern quotes Safiya Noble (another past Techtonic guest), who writes:

What we need is greater investment by taxpayers in civic alternatives, which would help us understand digital advertising platforms like Google, Facebook, and others for what they are, rather than thinking of them as the public library, which they are not.

Noble is exactly right. Google, as the platform that practically invented surveillance capitalism, is not a library. We might more accurately describe it as the antithesis of a civic institution, in that its ultimate aim is exploitation, rather than service, of the community. Regardless of how many pages are captured in its search index, or how many tech sectors it monopolizes, Google deserves no trust, and no authority, in the public sphere.

2. Blad

De nieuwste editie van American Libraries Magazine is online met diverse interessante artikelen.

Waaronder de reden(en) waarom bibliotheken strijders voor privacy zijn.

When the FBI approached George Christian in 2005 with a national security letter (NSL) and lifetime gag order, the then–executive director of the Library Connection—a Connecticut library consortium—convened a meeting with the organization’s executive committee. The NSL would have forced them to turn over customer information without a judge’s order or a grand jury subpoena. They refused to comply and later came to be known as the Connecticut Four.

With the help of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), they challenged the climate of surveillance and government overreach that followed the September 11 attacks, showing the nation that librarians would stand by the rights of patrons and civil liberties.

Als bibliotheek werk je voor de lokale gemeenschap. Zo ook voor de lokale muzikanten. Voor hen kun je een platform creëren waarmee ze naast de commerciële streamingdiensten hun muziek kunnen aanbieden.

Libraries across the country are using the expanding prevalence of music streaming to connect with local artists, offering them a platform to share their music digitally and freely to music lovers around the world.

3. Online

In Nederland kennen we OCLC nu vooral van OCLC Wise (voorheen HKA Wise). De academische bibliotheken kennen OCLC al een stuk langer en dat is ook de geboortegrond van OCLC, een universiteitsbibliotheek.

Inmiddels bestaat het fenomeen online catalogus dus 50 jaar! Een kijkje in het verleden!

“The creation of that first electronic catalog record by the OHIO Libraries was a transformative moment not only for libraries, but for the ways in which people think about, share and access information to this day,” said Neil Romanosky, dean of University Libraries. “The importance of the occasion — and the University and the Libraries’ role in it — cannot be overstated.”

4. Samen

Bibliotheken kunnen heel goed samenwerken met asielzoekercentra. Mooi om te zien hoe in Balk dit vorm gegeven is met deze tentoonstelling.

In de bibliotheek in Balk is van 21 augustus tot 1 oktober 2021 een bijzondere fototentoonstelling te zien. Het gaat om foto’s van bewoners en medewerkers van verschillende organisaties die in het azc aanwezig waren of zijn. Het COA wil met deze tentoonstelling het dorp Balk bedanken voor haar jarenlange gastvrijheid.

5. Diversiteit

De afgelopen week kwamen twee manifesten samen. Een Rotterdamse en een internationale.

In Rotterdam is een manifest gepubliceerd met de wens om meer inclusief te worden in de culturele sector.

Onlangs werd het manifest Cultuur/Inclusief gepresenteerd om institutioneel racisme in de Rotterdamse culturele sector aan te pakken. Caterine Baeten spreekt initiatiefnemers Janpier Brands en Pepijn Kuyper over de missie: “Soms moet je over je eigen ego-positie heen durven stappen in het belang van een ontwikkeling.” 

In de Amerikaanse bibliotheeksector is juist naar boven gekomen dat veel mensen leunen op het werk van BIPOC bibliothecarissen en dat daar iets aan gedaan moet worden.

BIPOC library, archives, and information workers and educators are tired of your Diversity Theater. We see you performing with your statements, your display of the vocabulary of anti-racism, your hashtags, profile photos, and symbolic gestures. What we want to see is you clearing obstacles and preventing harm while providing BIPOC library workers with clear tangibles, including but not limited to compensation, positions, opportunities, authority, and the other clear avenues of respect we deserve. 

6. School

In scholen in Enschede komen ook Bibliotheken op School. Een mooie start voor deze basisscholieren.

De leesvaardigheid, maar vooral ook het leesplezier van jonge kinderen in Enschede moet omhoog. Dus trekt de bibliotheek de basisscholen in. Vanaf dit schooljaar krijgen achttien scholen een echte 'bieb' in hun gebouw.

Maar aan de andere kant komt er ook weer kritiek op de Bibliotheken op School.

Haar boek De TikTok Challenge verkoopt als een malle. Inmiddels is de vierde druk in omloop en heeft de uitgever gevraagd om een vervolg. Kinderboekenschrijfster Annet Jacobs uit Almelo geniet van het succes, maar verdient onvoldoende met de boekenverkoop om van rond te komen. "Ik heb er een parttime baan naast."

Gelukkig wordt het leengeld in Enschede wel betaald.

7. Snuiter

Soms lopen er wel hele vreemde snuiters in de bibliotheek...

8. Niks

Er is niks mis met een bibliothecaris, die haar lage loon aanvult met sekswerk.

Cooper also now leads the Library Defense Network, which she founded in 2017 after a library in Westland fired five librarians when they began unionizing. Her work led to the resignation of the director and the entire library board, she said.

“I learned a lot about the power of direct action and organizing,” she said.

“I Was a Stripper Librarian” also touches on the overlap between library advocacy and sex work advocacy, which often intersects at privacy, Cooper said.

9. Echt

Je kunt allerlei tentoonstellingen organiseren in een bibliotheek, maar een virtuele is toch wel een hele interessante!

In de bibliotheek van Hoogeveen opent maandag de tentoonstelling Bilderwald/Beeldenbos, een augmented reality tentoonstelling van de kunstenaars Gejan Stol, Raymond van Es en Sina Barkmann.

10. UX

Het woord User Experience (kortweg UX) komt maar nauwelijks voor in de Nederlandse bibliotheeksector. Echter wordt het wel toegepast en wel in de UB van Amsterdam. Een leerzaam interview.

Lastly, we looked at how User Experience can work in libraries. We presented “User Experience for Libraries: The Best Tools and Methods for Beginners” in a blog article. We also showed “User Experience in Libraries: 4 Best Practice Examples from the ZBW” here. Today we would like to look beyond our own nose to the Netherlands to see what experiences have been made with UX at the Library of the University of Amsterdam.

In the process, we were lucky enough to have Larissa Tijsterman give us insights into her experiences with User Experience. Larissa works as a Library Services Employee & UX researcher in the Library of the University of Amsterdam. She is deeply involved in user-centred design and critical library science.
