Welkom!

Een nieuwe dinsdag, een nieuwe maand en een nieuw jaar! Fijn dat je over bent gekomen naar deze nieuwe plek, het archief van de Bieb Letter is er ook. Het was nogal hectisch de afgelopen weken, vandaar dat deze editie zo laat komt.Veel lees- en inspiratieplezier!

1. Spoken

Vorig jaar had ik het al over spoken en ik blijf een beetje bij de spoken, want ook de UB van Amsterdam heeft het over spoken. Maar dan in een heel groot boekenmagazijn.

We werken echt allemaal samen en als de één klaar is dan krijgt de ander hulp. Het kan dat je een hele dag gewerkt hebt en aan het eind van de werkdag een collega tegenkomt die roept: “Hey, was jij er ook?!”. Het depot is echt gigantisch. Je zou denken dat we op een gegeven moment uit onze voegen barsten, maar er is ook nog een vierde verdieping. Daar ben ik nog nooit geweest, dus voor mij is het een spookverdieping. Maar we kunnen er nog een tijdje tegenaan hier.’

2. Stijl

De landelijke huisstijl lijkt wel heel erg op de landelijke huisstijl van de Rijksoverheid. Of niet? En willen we dan wel of niet een verlengstuk zijn van de Rijksoverheid?Inmiddels is het steeds marketingtechnischer aan het worden.

Tot 2020 werd de Bibliotheek als mono brand gepositioneerd, als één merk. Maar de kracht van de Bibliotheek schuilt juist in de aansluiting op de lokale context. Die eigen accenten sluiten aan bij de maatschappelijk-educatieve rol die de Bibliotheek tegenwoordig vervult. We zijn een House of Brands: een familie van merken. Verschillend, maar met een gezamenlijk merkverhaal, gemeenschappelijke pijlers (Leer, Vraag, Ontmoet, Lees en Doe) en een gedeelde ambitie.

3. Vragen

De bibliotheek is nog altijd een vraagbaak voor mensen. De afgelopen jaren blijkt maar weer dat de bibliotheek een goed startpunt is voor burgers. Zoiets geldt natuurlijk niet alleen voor de Europese landen, maar je kunt altijd even kijken hoe het in Australië is.

Libraries matter because education cannot commence without information.

Information tells us our past, to prepare ourselves for the future, and libraries as information providers play a vital part in providing evidence to researchers to cease the repeat of past actions of discrimination – to make Australia a lucky country for all Australians.

4. Verslaafd

De meth-epidemie in de VS is best een heftige, waarin ook bibliothecarissen getraind worden hoe om te gaan met overmatig drugsgebruik. In deze bibliotheek was het methgebruik te groot en moest zelfs de bibliotheek sluiten, omdat er teveel meth in de lucht hing. Best heftig.

Officials in the Denver suburb of Englewood shut down the city library last week within a couple of hours of getting test results Wednesday showing that the contamination in the facility’s restrooms exceeded state thresholds, city spokesman Chris Harguth said.

Other spaces such as countertops also tested positive for lower levels of the drug and will require specialized cleaning, he said. The larger-scale remediation work will include removing tainted surfaces, walls, ductwork and exhaust fan equipment.

5. Label

We krijgen er nog een app bij. Speciaal voor een bepaalde groep scholieren en studenten. Op zich fijn, misschien is het nog een idee om deze app dan een speciale naam te geven? In de VS heb je bijvoorbeeld een app genaamd Libby.

Het gaat om een tijdelijke app, alleen tijdens de pilotperiode van maart 2023 tot ca. mei 2024 te gebruiken is. We maken een kopie van de huidige online Bibliotheek-app met een aparte selectie voor de doelgroepen vmbo-leerlingen en mbo-leerlingen. Er is geen bibliotheeklidmaatschap nodig om gebruik te maken van deze tijdelijke app. Op deze manier willen we deze doelgroep een laagdrempelige toegang bieden tot een aantrekkelijke digitale collectie van circa 100 e-books en luisterboeken.

6. Muziek

Muziek hoort nog steeds in de bibliotheken. Je kunt het echt laagdrempelig maken, zodat mensen instrumenten kunnen uitproberen. Op zich is het dan ook logisch dat bibliotheken gaan samenwerken met muziekscholen etc, maar positioneer het ook daadwerkelijk in de bibliotheek.

Deze Australische 'bibliotheek' leent geen instrumenten uit, maar mensen kunnen de instrumenten nog uitproberen. Zo blijft muziek levend.

7. AI

Zouden we moeten, willen, kunnen voorspellen wanneer een boek ingeleverd wordt? Volgens OCLC is het mogelijk. Maar is het ook wenselijk?

Kan kunstmatige intelligentie (AI) helpen bij het voorspellen van het inlevermoment? Welke technische, juridische en ethische aspecten komen er bij kijken? En wat leren we hiervan voor de inzet van kunstmatige intelligentie binnen de bibliotheekwereld?

Deze vragen stonden centraal in de Wise AI Pilot. In deze presentatie voor het Wise Directeurenoverleg (WDO) leer je meer over de pilot en de belangrijkste bevindingen.

8. Kaart

Bibliotheken denken steeds meer over hoe om te gaan met een lidmaatschap. We kennen in Nederland wel het concept van freemium/premium-model. Hieronder lees je een beschouwing over de vraag wat we met het lidmaatschap moeten en wat we ermee kunnen.

At the end of 2022 I was struck by the question posed by Gabrielle Dolan business storyteller in her final blog post of the year.

‘Are we getting the basics right or wrong?’

It got me thinking about libraries and how often we can get the basics wrong due to an abundance of caution and an assumption that the status quo from the past 40 years is still relevant.

9. ChatGPT

Ik denk dat de bibliotheken ook verder moeten gaan praten over de implicaties van ChatGPT. Hieronder vind je een aantal internationale artikelen.

These past few weeks seemed to have reignited a focus on what AI and chatbots can do and how they are set to impact our lives. As a teacher librarian, I know I need to up-skill and learn about this area, as it is set to impact how student search, research, write, edit and submit their work. It will change how teachers prepare lessons, mark, how we check for plagiarism and how we teach students about AI.

TLs are well positioned to design and implement digital citizenship and media literacy programs that include algorithmic and AI literacy. These are not really new additions to what TLs already teach, but the evolution of generative AI certainly has brought them to the forefront. Being aware of the ethical implications of AI technologies – such as algorithmic bias, copyright and intellectual property issues, use of private data, environmental impacts – as well as the increased need for critical evaluation of online information brought about the facilitation of disinformation generation, amplification of bias etc generated by these tools are just part of what the TL can teach students (and teachers) or can consult with teachers to embed within current curriculum.

Mark Deckers liet zijn licht ook al schijnen op deze tool (bekijk het vooral als hulpmiddel/tool). Alleen is het wel zaak voor de consulenten mediawijsheid nog dieper op de materie te duiken.

In mijn vorige blog haalde ik aan welke weg wij al hebben afgelegd met internet. Die weg is dus nog lang niet ten einde. We leerden mailen, we leerden internetten, we leerden omgaan met sociale media. De trein van digitalisering dendert door. Dat bibliotheken zich druk maken over AI is dus niet zo gek. De AI-parade trekt nog immer door het land en wie er meer over wil weten of wil weten waar die parade nu is, kan terecht bij de agenda van de AI-coalitie. En als je zelf ChatGPT wil gebruiken, begin dan eens bij deze instructiepagina, daar heb ik veel aan gehad.

Ik begon zelf ook vragen te stellen aan ChatGPT, maar echt slim is het systeem niet.

Overigens heeft deze tool voor academische bibliotheken nog heel wat voeten in de aarde.

I have been playing around and trying to learn by reading papers about Large Language Models (LLM) since 2020 when OpenAI’s GPT-3 was released. My interest has mostly been on the potential of the state of art capabilities natural language processing that LLMs brings to improve discovery, particularly in the area of extracting answers from documents

But I would be blind not to realize that the part of LLM that causes the most excitement is its ability to generate text! After all, my very first use was to use GPT-3 to produce a blog post!

In this long post, I first talk about how things have changed with the launch of ChatGPT (mainstream awareness of LLMs is here or near that), which has led to a host of situations for misuse - students using them to generate essays for assignments is the use case that educators who assign essays as homework are worried about.

11. Voorwerpen

Je kunt al heel lang verschillende voorwerpen lenen die geen boeken zijn. Hieronder een overzicht van allerlei interessante voorwerpen.

Tool lending libraries have also been established overseas in the United Kingdom, stated the study. Scotland’s Edinburgh Tool Library was established in 2015, which inspired similar institutions in areas like Leith and Portobello in Edinburgh, and in 2018, a Library of Things was established in London, England, which is run by volunteers who assist interested organizations and municipalities in creating their own tool libraries.

With the popularity of audio and digital books and rising inflation increasing the cost of tools and implements everywhere, public libraries in the United States and around the world may all adopt the tool-lending precedents established by pioneers such as the Grosse Pointe and Berkley public libraries, which have tool lending models that have been used successfully for decades.

Lindsay Zrull, the adult services librarian at HDL, said she had the idea for the station after recently moving back to West Michigan from Boston and being warned Holland is cloudy throughout the winter.

“I thought it would be a great idea to use our library resources to give people a little dose of sunshine whenever they need it,” she said.

Zrull said about 80 people have utilized the Sunshine Station since it became available on Jan. 1.

Additionally, library guests can also check out the white light therapy lamps through Herrick’s Library of Things. Currently, there are five available to check out.

De Meet-o-theek in Forum Groningen is een succes. Vorig jaar werden er ruim honderd keer apparaten uitgeleend.

Forum Groningen opende in de zomer van 2021 de eerste meet-o-theek van Nederland. Aanvankelijk was er eens per twee weken de mogelijkheid om meetinstrumenten gratis te komen lenen. Doordat het succes toenam werd dit later eens per week. In totaal zijn er op dit moment twintig verschillende apparaten te leen.

12. Collectie

Ook de collecties van bibliotheken kunnen verder ontsloten worden door AI. In Nederland kennen we de vruchten van AI door de NBD. Niet iedereen is daar blij mee. Er zijn nog meer voorbeelden in de wereld van collecties ontsluiten met AI.

Included in the report, which you can read below, is a series of speculative futures focused on collecting, preserving, accessing, and generating meaning with library collections through emerging technologies, including AI. These speculative futures are designed to help people approach conversations around AI in the Library with a broader sense of context, consequence, and imagination. We also include a tool called the Cybernetic Star, which helps organisations unpack and work-through the relationships and dependencies at play when planning for technology transitions, such as implementing AI-powered systems.

Overall, AI can be a valuable tool for librarians in helping the public access and use information more effectively. By leveraging this technology, we can provide patrons with faster and more personalized service, and help them discover new and relevant resources that meet their needs.

In België wordt AI gebruikt om oude boeken te catalogiseren. Hieronder wordt getoond hoe ze dat doen.

13. Aanval

De aanvallen van de rechts georiënteerde mensen in Amerika blijven maar doorgaan. Het is soms echt doodeng om bibliothecaris daar te zijn.

“What we have been observing is a growing effort to censor books that reflect the experiences of marginalized groups under this idea that, somehow, either that it’s morally unacceptable for any young person to know that there are gay people in the world, or that a narrative about U.S. history that illuminates systemic racism is somehow un-American and Marxist,” Caldwell-Stone told me.

The effort has been fueled by more than 50 groups that have coalesced around book restrictions and bans at every level, according to the nonprofit PEN America, which advocates for freedom of expression and has been tracking censorship attempts in schools.

Book bans are only one of the issues that public libraries are currently facing. In Tennessee, lawmakers want to force librarians to list all the materials they offer and to conduct periodic reviews to make sure the materials are “age-appropriate,” a measure many librarians told Chalkbeat is unnecessary and beyond the scope of their job. Across the country, several librarians have been attacked or doxxed for standing up for books that are deemed controversial or worthy of being banned.

Niet alleen lijden de bibliothecarissen eronder, ook de jeugd krijgt een mentale knauw.

The ongoing fight over the rights of young people to access books is contributing to their trauma. This is especially true for queer kids and kids of color, who are seeing grown adults fight against their rights to live their lives. Who are witnessing adults who began their Joyful War against access to literature saying that kids were struggling in school because they were “muzzled” by masks. Who kept it going, saying that requiring vaccinations was an invasion of bodily autonomy for children. Who then moved on to fighting against the very books on school and library shelves under the guise of “caring for the kids,” because teachers and librarians were not actually interested in the well-being of young people but are instead “groomers” who are “sexualizing them” at young ages.

14. Roeping

Het artikel van Fobazi Ettarh over vocational awe in de bibliotheek is nog altijd een klassieker. Maar er moet wel duidelijk gemaakt worden, dat niet elke persoon met vocational awe in de bibliotheek slecht is. Onderstaand artikel legt goed uit hoe het zit.

I think we owe it to our new colleagues to help them see the profession through a critical lens, to recognize the labor dynamics at play, to see that our profession’s leaders capitalize on the vocational awe of library workers to create a culture of overwork, and to recognize that they are doing a great job by “just” doing exactly what their job description asks of them. And someone who still chooses vocational awe, knowing all that, is not an ally. They are not in solidarity with their fellow workers. And no, that choice does not deserve respect. And I say that as someone who once had a strong sense of vocational awe, who once worked herself to the bone for her job, and who believed I was a good colleague because I was doing more than my fair share. I was totally wrong. I don’t think people with a sense of vocation are capable of not causing harm, either to their colleagues or to themselves, even though that is likely the last thing they would have intended.

15. Vervoer

De verborgen helden van de bibliotheken zijn toch wel de chauffeurs van de vervoersbussen. Maar ook de personen achter de schermen die alle boeken weer naar de juiste plek sturen.

Our Distribution Center opened in early September 2019. The Distribution Center helps us get library materials into the hands of community members quickly and more efficiently.

In 2019, the Library loaned over 19.9 million items to the residents of Hamilton County, so a state of the art distribution center is necessary to continue to provide excellent service to the community.

Staff and administrators at the Library have worked closely with logistics consultants to determine how best to design the facility in order to be more efficient. With new delivery routes and a new sorter, you can expect materials to reach our facilities faster, resulting in you receiving your items sooner.

En voordat de boeken in de bibliotheken komen, moeten ze natuurlijk nog gekocht worden. In Noord-Friesland zijn ze nog steeds goed bezig met hun methode van aankopen, klaar maken en verzenden.

Een aantal jaar geleden heeft Bibliotheken Noord Fryslân besloten haar actuele boeken voor volwassenen in te kopen bij Boekhandel van der Velde. In principe kopen alle bibliotheken in Nederland hun boeken bij NBD Biblion in Zoetermeer. Daar worden ze geplastificeerd en voorbereid voor de uitlening. Een mooi systeem, maar toch duurde het soms even voordat de boeken binnenkwamen.

Bibliotheken Noord Fryslan wilde de bestsellers graag op de dag dat ze uitkomen en in de boekhandel liggen, óók in de bibliotheek hebben. En daarom klopte de bibliotheek aan bij Boekhandel Van der Velde. Zij kopen de nieuwste boeken nu tegelijk in voor bibliotheek én boekhandel zodat ze snel beschikbaar zijn voor de lezers.

16. Overig

Er waren afgelopen tijd zoveel interessante berichten, maar omwille van de deadline van dinsdagochtend kom ik niet meer toe om deze te becommentariëren. Desondanks zijn ze interessant!
